Snapchat uses emojis, icons and symbols as a representation of different things, and often times, these can get confusing to new users. One such is the Snapchat Hourglass emoji.
Snapchat introduced the Hourglass emoji, otherwise known as the Timer emoji, in March 2016 and since then, many people have been clueless about this new feature.
Users have tweeted out asking what the hourglass (or timer) indicates. We’ll take a look at the meaning of this new emoji and what to do when it appears.

The Snapchat hourglass/timer emoji appears next to a friend’s name, like all emojis. Seeing as how Snapchat has always been secretive about the meaning of their emojis and other features including the snapchat score, this new emoji too is driving people nuts.
Snapchat Hourglass: Explanation
According to a tweet by the official Snapchat Twitter account, the Snapchat hourglass ⌛️ emoji appears when a Snapstreak is going to end soon.
What is Snapchat Hourglass?
Snapchat Hourglass is an emoji that appears next to a friend’s name on Snapchat when a snapstreak is about to end. When the Snapchat hourglass appears, it means that you haven’t been exchanging snaps with your friends within the past 24 hours.
For those of you that do not know what a Snapstreak is, it’s the fire emoji 🔥 that appears alongside the hourglass emoji. When you and a friend have been exchanging snaps on a regular basis, it’s called a Snapstreak, indicated by the fire emoji. You lose your Snapstreak if you haven’t been exchanging snaps within 24 hours.
With the new update, Snapchat lets you know when your Snapstreak is going to end using the hourglass emoji. It’s telling you that you haven’t been exchanging snaps within the past 20 or so hours. To maintain your streak, both you and your friend should send each other snaps within 24 hours, else you’ll end up losing your snapstreak (indicated by the number that appears along side the fire emoji).
How to Get Rid of the Snapchat Hourglass Emoji
When you get the hourglass emoji, the next obvious step, naturally, is to send that friend a snap.
Because it is an indication of the ending of a Snapstreak, it is also a reminder to you that you should exchange snaps with each other. So, to get rid of the hourglass emoji, send out a snap to the friend in question.
It should be noted that sending texts and other chat messages (audio/video) do not count as a snap. In order to remove the hourglass emoji, you need to send out a proper snap (picture or video) to your friend.
How long does Snapchat Hourglass last?
Snapchat Hourglass appears when you haven’t snapchatted each other for more than 24 hours, so naturally, it’s safe to assume that it lasts for 24 hours. You need to exchange snaps within the next 24 hours to maintain your streak.
How long before a Streak dies?
Streaks are updated every 24 hours. If a streak is not maintained, the Hourglass/Timer emoji appears. So to answer this question, a Snap streak dies after 48 hours.
When do you get the Hourglass on Snapchat
The hourglass on Snapchat appears when you haven’t been snapchatting each other for more than 24 hours. This means that your snapstreak is about to end.
