Actionable tips and expert advice on all things digital.
We’ve often been asked by our readers what the Snapchat loading screen problem is all about. Sometimes, you’d get a blank screen on your Snapchat app saying ‘Tap to Load‘, or sometimes, an unending loading icon will appear without ever completely loading.
There are several reasons that could cause this problem — it could be as simple as a network error to a more complicated cache problem. Whatever the reason, we’ll try to sort them out in this guide.
Why Snapchat is not loading and why it is stuck on the loading screen
The most common reason why Snapchat users get the ‘Tap to Load’ loading screen error is because of poor internet connectivity. This is 90% of the cases. Sometimes, the wifi settings have changed or your cellular data has run out.
Some of the reasons why your Snapchat is stuck on the loading screen are:
- You have a poor internet connectivity
- Snapchat’s servers are down
- Your Snapchat app is outdated
- Your cache data is corrupted
- Data Saver mode is on
- Battery optimization is on
- There’s a bug
There may be other reasons that could cause this error, but we’re sure one of the following methods surely will solve the problem.
1. Check your internet connection
To see if your internet connection is working fine, open your browser and try visiting any website (or google). If you’re able to access the site, it means your internet connection is working fine.
If you’re unable to access a site, maybe try opening your Instagram or Facebook app and see if your feed updates automatically. If that’s not the case, it definitely means you have a poor internet connectivity.
If you’re on a wifi network, make sure your password is correct and that you are connected to the correct network. It’s quite easy to automatically connect to public wifi networks; these are unstable and rarely works, if at all.
If you’re on a cellular network (data), make sure you haven’t run out of data.
2. Check if Snapchat’s servers are down
You’d be amazed at how many times the ‘Tap to Load screen’ error happens because Snapchat’s servers are down. With over a billion users and counting, the amount of resources and server space required to keep the app running continuously is almost unprecedented.
And like any web entity, Snapchat too sometimes face server errors and downtimes.
To make sure that Snapchat isn’t down, visit the site Down Detector and check the status of Snapchat. If Snapchat is down, then every Snapchat user in the entire planet is probably asking the same question as you are.
3. Update your Snapchat app
It’s quite possible, although it rarely is the case, that the ‘Snapchat stuck on loading screen’ error may be caused because your app is out of date.
There are new updates made to the Snapchat app almost every month. If these updates aren’t core updates, chances are you have been using the same version for quite a while now. Core updates will alert you to update your entire app, and barely will you get suck notifications.
So, it is best to keep your app updated to enjoy the latest features that Snapchat offers, and possibly fix the ‘Tap to load’ screen loading problem.
To update your Snapchat app to the latest version, head on over to Google Play Store or Apple App Store, search for the Snapchat app, and where it says ‘Update‘, tap on it to update your app.
4. Clear your app Cache data
Cache in an app are media and data files that are hidden or stored away for later use. If it gets corrupted, it could compromise the entire app.
So it’s wise to clear your cache every once in a while, even if you don’t have any problem. Clearing your cache data will not affect your conversations and snap history in any way.
To clear your Snapchat app cache, open Snapchat and go to your Profile Screen > Settings > Clear cache (at the bottom), tap on Clear cache.
If you’re unable to access the Snapchat app, you can clear the app cache by opening your device Settings > Applications > Snapchat > Storage and tapping on the Clear cache option.
5. Turn off Data Saver mode
If you’re able to access your Snapchat settings, turn off ‘Data Saver’ mode.
The Data Saver function reduces data consumption by the app as per demand. It’s quite possible that, with this function turned on, the app restricts your data usage so much so that you’re getting stuck on the loading screen and getting the ‘Tap to Load’ error. This also sometimes cause the ‘Snapchat not sending message error’, or ‘the Unable to send message, tap to retry’ error.
However, if you’re stuck at the beginning of the screen and having no access to the app whatsoever, this step is unnecessary as you’d have no access to the Settings anyway.
6. Disable Battery Optimization for Snapchat
Most smartphones, when battery levels have gone down below 20%, are automatically battery optimized to save battery life. Also, in some cases, you might have manually optimized your battery usage for a particular app. This is quite likely given that Snapchat consumes a lot of battery life.
Some of Snapchat’s functions cannot work when it’s features are restricted by your phone and its optimization settings.
If your phone is on automatic battery life-saver mode, perhaps charging your battery or turning off the battery saver function will do the trick.
If, however, you have manually set the Snapchat app for battery optimization, you might want to turn that off. To do this, go to your phone’ Settings > Apps > Snapchat > Battery > Optimize battery usage. Disable optimization by toggling off the optimization options.
7. Reboot your phone
Believe it or not, rebooting your phone can do wonders to your apps. Most phones aren’t switched off for months on end. And in all that time, there has bound to be something gone amiss.
If all of the above steps have not yet solved the Snapchat screen loading error, the next best step is to simply restart/reboot your phone.
8. Uninstall and Re-install your Snapchat app
If, even after rebooting your phone, Snapchat is still giving you the screen loading error, aka ‘Tap to load’ error, the last option is to uninstall and re-install your Snapchat app.
This will not delete any of your previous conversations and snaps as those are stored safely away in their database. Once re-installed, you can simply always log in to your account again.
